South Korean auto parts maker Hyundai Mobis has been quickly shifting its focus toward software development and platform-focused technology, the company said Wednesday.

The firm’s move is part of its effort to ride on the global automotive industry’s changing paradigm toward products and services that are combined with mobility platforms, it said.

Under three big pillars -– innovation as global business, innovation of business model and discovery of long-term, new growth business –- the core of Hyundai Mobis’ long-term strategy lies in strengthening its software prowess.

It has expanded cooperation with external firms specialized in software, as well as securing internal software talent.

Hyundai Mobis has also formed an open source ecosystem for cooperation with 13 other software developers to create local versions of automotive software. Within the system, when a software developer offers a system platform, partnering companies can add on their own technology to further develop the software.

To secure talent in the software field, Hyundai Mobis has been operating a flexible hiring process and training programs, such as picking talented students through coding tests and offering free software academy courses.

The company has also been putting effort into consciously empowering existing employees with evolving skillsets, such as hosting a software algorithm competition.
