[THE INVESTOR] LG Uplus said on Jan. 22 it will establish its 5G infrastructure in major cities by end-2019.

Following the launch of the world’s first 5G network with SK Telecom and KT, LG Uplus CEO Ha Hyun-hoi vowed to speed up the 5G network and create content on the new platform.

“We will provide innovative services in partnership with small and medium-sized companies by commercializing the 5G network for the first time in the world,” Ha said during a meeting with ICT, industry and startups ministers who were visiting LG Science Park in western Seoul. “We will showcase high-resolution videos and augmented and virtual reality content to make Korea the world leader in 5G.”

The mobile carrier has been stepping up its network to support LG Electronics’ 5G-enabled phones, which are expected to be released in March.

Last month, Ha said the company will invest over 4 trillion won (US$3.53 billion) to establish an extensive 5G network across the nation.

LG said it has set up about 5,500 5G base stations, far surpassing the combined 3,000 stations SK Telecom and KT are estimated to have.
