[ET NEWS] PARIS -- Korean battery maker LG Chem will supply batteries for Mercedes-Benz’s first full-electric car EQC that debuts next year, according to industry sources on Oct. 4.
Korea’s LG Chem and SK innovation along with China’s CATL have reportedly been named as the battery suppliers for the German luxury brand’s electric car brand EQ. For the first model EQC, LG Chem is the sole supplier.
Mercedes-Benz's first EV EQC
The EQC was unveiled in Sweden in September. Its production will start in the first quarter of next year. The car features an 80kWh lithium-ion battery that can drive more than 450 kilometers on a single charge.
LG Chem has already secured battery deals for the latest EV models made by European carmakers, including Audi’s e-tron and Jaguar’s i-Pace.
In the first half of this year, Panasonic, the sole battery supplier for Tesla, topped the EV battery market, followed by China’s CATL and BYD. Korea’s LG Chem and Samsung SDI stood fourth and fifth, respectively.
