[THE INVESTOR] Samsung Group Chairman Lee Kun-hee was named as an honorary member of the International Olympic Committee on Sept. 16.

The IOC made an announcement at the 131st general assembly meeting in Lima, Peru, that two former IOC members, including Lee and Norwegian industrialist Gerhard Heiberg, have been elected as honorary members.

The bed-ridden Samsung chairman was hospitalized in May 2014 following a severe heart attack. Due to his grave health condition family members had requested his resignation as an active IOC member.

Lee became an elected member of the IOC in 1996 and worked at the cultural committee in 1997 and finance committee in 1998-1999.
