[THE INVESTOR] Samsung Electronics recently registered a trademark for “The Window” in Europe, in an apparent bid to introduce a new type of premium TV, according to Dutch tech news outlet LetsGoDigital on Oct. 25.
The company registered the name under the category of TV at the European Union Intellectual Property Office, the sources said.
The Korean tech giant currently sells The Frame TV, a premium product that comes with a stylish frame-like design to display artwork or photos when not in use.
Samsung also makes a large TV that utilizes microLED technology and is named The Wall.
Accordingly, industry watchers said it is reasonable to assume that The Window will be a premium TV using innovative technologies.
While the website of the EUIPO showed no details other than the name, industry watchers said the new TV may sport a transparent display.
“Although there are no other details than the registered trademark, we cannot determine what the new product will be, but it is going to be a new type of TV,” an industry watcher said, suggesting the new TV may be unveiled at the CES 2019.
