[THE INVESTOR] Samsung Electronics slightly outpaced Chinese rival Xiaomi in the Indian smartphone market over this year’s second quarter, data showed on July 25.

The Korean tech giant took up 29 percent of the Indian market in the April-June period in terms of shipments, followed by Xiaomi with 28 percent, industry tracker Counterpoint Research said.

Other Chinese brands followed, with Vivo and Oppos taking up 12 percent and 10 percent, respectively, over the cited period, and Apple with 1 percent, Counterpoint Research said.

Xiaomi outpaced Samsung for the two previous quarters. In the first quarter of 2018, Samsung posted a market share of 26.2 percent, hovering below Xiaomi‘s 31.1 percent.

The latest neck-and-neck competition is in contrast to April-June period of 2017, when Samsung controlled 24 percent vis-a-vis Xiaomi’s 16 percent.

“Samsung has regained the leading position after ceding it to Xiaomi two quarters ago. The success of Samsung during the quarter can be attributed to its refreshed J-series; it launched more models than any other brand, across multiple price points, during the quarter,” the industry tracker said.
