[THE INVESTOR] The share of South Korea’s LG Display in the world’s display market has dropped to No. 2 for the first time since 2009.
Replacing LG as the top market player is China’s BOE Technology, according to data released by industry tracker IHS Markit.
BOE took up 21.7 percent of the market for display panels sized 9 inches or larger used in televisions, laptops and tablet PCs in the third quarter. LG Display took up 19.3 percent. Other major players in the third quarter included Taiwan’s Innolux, AU Optronics and Samsung Display, which had market shares of 16.1 percent, 15.8 percent and 8.9 percent, respectively.
Industry watchers blamed LG Display’s performance on the government’s reluctance to greenlight the company’s plan to open a new organic light-emitting diode panel factory in China, citing a possible technology leak.
LG, however, remained the No. 1 player in revenue.
