[THE INVESTOR] Samsung Electronics are joining forces with Chinese TV makers to spread its QLED brand against the growing OLED alliance led by its archrival LG Electronics.

According to industry sources on April 6, the Korean tech giant plans to hold a forum on April 14 in Beijing to introduce its latest liquid-crystal display-based TV technology, with a slew of Chinese TV makers, retailers and academics in attendance.

Samsung launched the QLED brand early this year to refer to its high-end LCD TVs that use light-emitting quantum dots to improve color reproduction.

Some critics are still skeptical about calling the Samsung TVs as “true QLED” considering there are two types of QLED: advanced LCD and converted OLED. Experts say it would take some 10 years for the most-advanced converted OLED to be commercialized.

Regardless of some confusion about the acronym, Samsung claims its advanced LCD can compete head-on with OLED that experts say offers brighter displays and better power efficiency over the standard LCD.

Sources say the upcoming event will be attended by major TV makers such as TCL and Hisense along with some academics from top elite schools such as Peking University and Tsinghua University.

“The event will become an opportunity to elevate awareness toward the latest technology and strengthen the alliance with Chinese TV makers,” a source said.

LG Electronics has been pouring considerable resources into OLED, being the largest OLED TV maker while its sister firm LG Display dominates the panel production. But the market is still nascent due to the still tricky and expansive panel production.

In order to expand the market, LG has also been teaming up with rivals, especially those in Japan such as Sony, Panasonic and Toshiba. More recently, China’s Skyworth has also jumped into the race along with BOE, its compatriot panel maker.
