[THE INVESTOR] Samsung Electronics has recently changed the hardware specifications of the next-generation flagship Galaxy S lineup, including the screen size, according to news reports on June 27.

The tech giant notified its suppliers that it plans to increase the screen size of the Galaxy S10+, a larger variant of the S10 lineup, from the initial 6.3 inches to 6.44 inches, local news outlet The Bell reported.

The latest move is seen as a countermeasure against Apple, which is anticipated to roll out an iPhone boasting a 6.46-inch screen later this year. The 6.44-inch Galaxy Note, when released, will be the largest in size among Samsung’s high-end smartphones. Usually, the Galaxy Note series feature a larger display than the S series.

The Note 9 to be launched in early August this year is expected to be installed with a 6.38 inch screen.

“The modified specs are not final and Samsung is still considering different options,” said an industry source, adding that “everything will be all set and ready by August.”

The S+ models, whose size usually fall between the S and Note, are niche devices. Unlike the Note series, they do not come with a digital pen.

Samsung has also decided to add one more variant to the S10 lineup. Like Apple’s budget smartphone iPhone SE, the new Galaxy model will be a mid-range smartphone and will feature a flat screen measuring approximately 5 inches. The two other top-tier Galaxy S10 models will have a screen curved on the right and left sides.

A triple-lens rear-facing camera, instead of dual cameras, is one of the killer features of the original Galaxy S10, as well as the bigger S10+. Samsung had initially planned dual cameras for the S10. The budget phone will feature a single-lens camera.

While Samsung is mulling an on-display fingerprint recognition technology for the S10, the iris authentication system can be ditched as it has halted the development of prototypes for iris scanners.
