Nam was born in 1952 in Euiryeong, South Gyeongsang Province.
He took over the food company from Won Hye-young in 1987, when the five-term lawmaker (as of 2016) left the firm founded by his father to pursue his career as a politician.
He and Won went to Kyungbock High School and Seoul National University, and joined as partners of Pulmuone in 1984. Nam originally worked at Hyundai Engineering & Construction and when he returned from the Middle East he invested in his friend’s small company, a pioneer in organic foodstuff.
He devoted himself to growing the company, even earning a doctorate degree in food engineering, and is widely credited for leading the company past the 1 trillion won annual sales mark.
Recently, though, Pulmuone has been posting low profitability, mainly due to struggling overseas operations.
Nam has received a 10-month jail term suspended for two years and 280 million won fine in 2015 for making unfair profits from insider trading.
Nam is married to Kim Myeong-heui and has one son and two daughters. Elder daughter Bambi made news when she filed for bankruptcy under accusations of fraud in 2012.
